Charlton Athletic Fan Dies After Championship Match Is Abandoned
A Charlton Athletic supporter has died after the club’s Championship match against Portsmouth was abandoned on Saturday following a serious medical emergency in the stands.
Play was halted in the 12th minute when emergency teams rushed to assist a fan who had fallen ill in the lower tier of the Covered End. Players waited on the pitch as medical staff worked at the scene, before referee Matthew Donohue instructed both teams to return to the dressing rooms.
With the score still 0–0, the match was officially called off nearly an hour after the incident.
Charlton later confirmed in a statement that the supporter had died in hospital.
Both Charlton and Portsmouth described themselves as “devastated” by the news.
“The club would like to thank the Charlton staff and first responders who did everything they could, but sadly the supporter later passed away in hospital,” Charlton said. “We are grateful to supporters in attendance, as well as the Portsmouth players and staff, for their patience and understanding as this tragedy unfolded.
“Everyone at the club sends their heartfelt condolences to the supporter’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.”
