Rangers snatch late win over Livingston as SFA eye action after controversial social media post
Rangers finally recorded their first Scottish Premiership victory of the season with a dramatic 2-1 win over Livingston on Sunday.
James Tavernier’s spectacular opener gave the Ibrox side the lead before the captain missed a penalty. Livingston hit back early in the second half through Mohammad Sylla’s header, but Max Aarons struck in the 94th minute to seal a much-needed three points, lifting Rangers up to eighth and easing some of the pressure on under-fire boss Russell Martin.
However, it was an incident off the pitch that could draw attention from the Scottish FA.
With Rangers 1-0 up, Derek Cornelius thought he had netted his first goal for the club, only for VAR to rule it out for handball. In response, Livingston’s official X account posted a sarcastic live update that read: “Livingston get a VAR decision,” alongside clapping emojis.
The post is expected to lead to disciplinary action, with observers pointing out that similar remarks at grassroots level have already resulted in fines and suspensions. A financial sanction is now likely to follow in order to deter clubs from criticising officials publicly.
Meanwhile, chants calling for Martin’s dismissal continued despite the victory, with Rangers enduring their worst league start in nearly half a century. The manager faces a crucial spell, with upcoming fixtures against Sturm Graz and Falkirk seen as must-win if he is to hold on to his job.
