Scottish former footballer Michael Stewart brutally criticised Brendan Rodgers after his recent comments on his team

Michael Stewart has taken aim at Brendan Rodgers for his recent remarks about the quality of Celtic’s squad, warning that such comments could harm player morale. Rodgers sparked controversy after Sunday’s 2-0 defeat to Dundee by comparing his team to being given “the keys to a Honda Civic” and asked to race it like a Ferrari — a clear dig at Celtic’s recruitment strategy.

While acknowledging Rodgers’ underlying point, Stewart argued that the delivery was ill-judged and risked alienating the very players the manager needs to inspire. With pressure mounting on the club and fans already venting frustration at the board, Stewart believes Rodgers’ words could create unnecessary strain within the squad at a crucial time for unity.

Speaking on The Scottish Football Social Club, Stewart said: “I’ve no doubt that Celtic’s transfer business has affected the manager’s mindset. But for Brendan Rodgers to come out and say that he’s been handed the keys to a Honda Civic and expected to drive it like a Ferrari — seriously? I get what he’s trying to say, and I don’t completely disagree, but if I’m one of those players, he’s basically just called me a Honda Civic.”

Stewart’s comments highlight a broader debate over how managers express frustration during tough periods. While Rodgers may have intended to underline his dissatisfaction with the club’s transfer dealings, critics like Stewart argue his metaphor could further dent confidence in a squad already struggling for belief.
