Padilla contended that Vance’s statement serves as an illustration of the Trump administration’s “petty and unserious” nature.
On Friday, Sen. Alex Padilla, a Democrat from California, responded to Vice President JD Vance’s use of the nickname “Jose” during a press conference in Los Angeles. This action elicited a significant backlash from Democrats nationwide.
On June 12, the Democratic senator was forcibly removed and detained during a press event in his home state that featured Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem. The senator was criticised by his Republican colleagues for potentially violating the law and for failing to fulfil his duties.
On Saturday, Padilla contended on MSNBC that Vance’s decision to address him as “Jose” serves as an illustration of the Trump administration’s “petty and unserious” nature.
“He is aware of my name,” Padilla insisted, adding, “He is the Vice President of the United States; you would expect him to be more concerned about the situation in Los Angeles.”
Senator Padilla criticised the vice president for failing to meet with the families in Los Angeles who have been “terrorised” by the administration’s deportation efforts in order to “feel what’s really going on, on the ground.”
He subsequently claimed that a significant number of the Marines who were dispatched to Los Angeles to quell the anti-ICE protests are dissatisfied with their station there.
“You observed him [JD Vance] shaking hands with Marines; however, did he pay attention to their instructions?” Padilla enquired. “Because we have received report after report of the Marines not wanting to be present—a significant number of them.” That is not the reason they enlisted. He continued his criticisms of Vance by criticising the vice president for failing to engage with the “concerned” employers of illegal immigrants who, according to him, have been speaking out against the administration’s deportations.
He suggested, “Why don’t you take a moment to speak with the Sheriff of Los Angeles County?” “Interact with the Chief of Police of Los Angeles City and ascertain their dissatisfaction with the lack of coordination and communication, which has resulted in this unwarranted and counterproductive accumulation.”
