Seny Dieng delivers farewell message after Sheffield Wednesday spell ends and Middlesbrough return confirmed

Seny Dieng thanks Sheffield Wednesday supporters after Middlesbrough return

Seny Dieng has expressed his gratitude to the “incredible” Sheffield Wednesday supporters after returning to his parent club, Middlesbrough.

The 31-year-old goalkeeper has fallen down the pecking order at the Riverside and is yet to make a senior appearance for the club this season. Instead, he has mainly featured for the club’s Under-21 side as speculation continues about his long-term future.

However, Wednesday’s ongoing goalkeeping injury problems opened the door for Dieng to gain some first-team minutes. Following an injury to Owls goalkeeper Murphy Cooper, the experienced stopper joined the club on an emergency loan to help cover the gap.

After his short spell at Hillsborough came to an end, Dieng took to Instagram to thank the club and its supporters, writing: “Thank you to everyone at Sheffield Wednesday and the incredible fans.”

The Senegal international played the full 90 minutes in three matches during his time with Wednesday, appearing in games against Sheffield United, Norwich City and Southampton.

Dieng sends farewell message

Dieng has now returned to Middlesbrough after Pierce Charles recovered and returned to contention. Before departing, the goalkeeper shared a brief farewell message.

The shot-stopper appeared to be well liked in the dressing room, with teammate Liam Cooper responding to his post by writing: “Top man, go well mate.” Meanwhile, Charles also praised Dieng, describing him as a “top guy.”

Sheffield Wednesday’s goalkeeping troubles

Wednesday had hoped Pierce Charles would establish himself as their first-choice goalkeeper after the club managed to keep hold of the Northern Ireland international last summer.

But injuries to the 20-year-old have forced the Owls to bring in several temporary replacements during the season. Ethan Horvath, Joe Lumley, Murphy Cooper and Dieng have all arrived on loan at different stages of the campaign.

Speaking about Charles’ fitness, the manager said the club hopes he will be available for Saturday’s match.

“He has had several really good sessions and there is no pain or problems after all the tests,” he explained.

“He has been involved in 11-v-11 training, and although it has been a long time since his last match, there are no health risks that should stop him from playing in the next game in Derby.”
