SFA Misses Opportunity to Address Controversial Celtic IncidentThis week, the SFA’s Key Match Incident (KMI) panel has been the subject of much attention, particularly for their decision that Reo Hatate should have been sent off during Celtic’s 2-0 win over Kilmarnock.

Nevertheless, the tribunal has completely disregarded an equally contentious moment from the same match: Liam Donnelly’s elbow to Celtic custodian Kasper Schmeichel. Donnelly appeared to deliberately extend his elbow as he ran past Schmeichel late in the encounter, causing him to become enraged.

The intention behind the action was evident, despite the fact that Donnelly’s attempt ultimately struck Schmeichel in the torso rather than the face. Donnelly was issued a yellow card by referee Nick Walsh; however, many, including Schmeichel, believed that the incident warranted a more severe penalty. Violent Conduct Ignored in Clear

The KMI panel has reportedly decided not to discuss the incident further, and VAR did not examine it during the game.

This decision raises significant concerns regarding the consistency of post-match analysis and officiating. Celtic supporters are left perplexed by the panel’s emphasis on Hatate’s late challenge, which disregards conduct that could be classified as violent.

The regulations regarding violent behaviour are unequivocal; the participant is subject to punishment regardless of whether or not they are successful in their intentions. Donnelly’s action was both deliberate and irresponsible, as there was no attempt to manipulate the ball.

The KMI panel’s dismissal of such conduct, which was only sanctioned with a yellow card on the day, conveys the incorrect message regarding fair play and player safety. At the time, Kasper Schmeichel’s response was self-evident. Given the nature of the challenge, it was only natural for the Danish custodian to be enraged.

Donnelly’s escape with only a booking will be perceived as a missed opportunity to address a clear act of aggression that could have led to severe injury. This incident underscores the inconsistencies in the manner in which decisions are made.

Although the attention has been directed towards Hatate’s tackle, it is imperative that incidents such as this receive the same level of scrutiny in order to preserve the integrity of the game. The absence of action regarding Donnelly’s elbow is expected to remain a concern as Celtic prepare for a hectic schedule of fixtures.

In a little over a week, we will return to Tynecastle, where we were defeated 2-0 last time due to some outstanding judgements that were made against us. Celtic will anticipate that the capital will have more robust officials this time around.
