The Scottish FA’s Key Match Incident (KMI) panel has ruled that Derek Cornelius’s yellow card in Rangers’ clash with Celtic was the correct decision. The defender was booked for a tackle on Johny Kenny late in the first half of the Premier Sports Cup semi-final.
Despite claims from Celtic fans and pundits that the challenge warranted a red card, the panel unanimously agreed the referee’s decision to show a yellow was justified.
Thelo Aasgaard was dismissed for a foul on Anthony Ralston, leaving Celtic with a numerical advantage. However, the panel also concluded unanimously that Auston Trusty should have been sent off for catching Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland in the head with his boot.
Rangers boss Danny Rohl commented:
“The referee has their view, and they’re applying the rules. But we have our own perspective.
For me, any contact with the head is dangerous. You have to be careful because it can easily cause injury, no matter the angle.”
