Sheffield Wednesday have completed the signing of former Leeds United defender Liam Cooper, securing him on a deal that runs through the end of the current season.
The 34-year-old centre-half, who has amassed over 400 senior appearances across his career, arrives at Hillsborough as a free agent following his recent spell with CSKA Sofia in Bulgaria. Cooper spent a decade at Leeds United, becoming one of the club’s longest-serving players of the modern era.
Cooper’s professional journey began at Hull City, before he made the switch to Chesterfield, where he played a key role in their 2014 League Two title win. His performances earned him a transfer to Elland Road, where he went on to establish himself as club captain.
During his time with Leeds, Cooper helped guide the team back to the Premier League in 2020 under Marcelo Bielsa and later featured for three seasons in the top flight. His form at club level also saw him break into the Scotland national team, representing his country at the European Championships in both 2020 and 2024.
After leaving Leeds, Cooper headed abroad in 2024 to join CSKA Sofia. He now returns to English football with Wednesday, where he will look to add valuable experience and leadership at the heart of the defence for the remainder of the campaign.
In other Wednesday news, Sean Fusire featured for more than an hour in Zimbabwe’s 2-1 friendly victory over Qatar on Monday.
