Sheffield Wednesday boss lays bare what went wrong in Hull City defeat

Sheffield Wednesday boss Henrik Pedersen reflects on Hull City defeat as winless run continues

Sheffield Wednesday’s difficult run stretched to 33 Championship matches without a win after a 3-1 loss to Hull City on Saturday.

The Owls started brightly at the MKM Stadium and took the lead through Jamal Lowe, whose effort took a deflection on its way into the net. However, their advantage was short-lived, as Hull responded almost immediately with an equaliser from Matt Crooks.

Wednesday looked set to head into the break level after a strong first-half showing, but a late setback saw them fall behind. An unfortunate own goal from Dominic Iorfa just before half-time gave the hosts a 2-1 lead.

Hull added a third in the second half through Kyle Joseph, effectively ending any hopes of a comeback for the visitors.

Despite the result, Pedersen took positives from his team’s display, particularly in the opening half. He acknowledged Hull’s strengths, describing them as one of the most intense sides in the league with a dangerous counter-attacking threat.

The Wednesday boss felt his team defended well for large periods and created opportunities in transition, but admitted key moments proved costly. Conceding immediately after taking the lead and the own goal before the break were major blows.

In the second half, Pedersen noted that Hull started stronger, though his side gradually regained control and saw more of the ball. However, a turnover led to another counter-attacking goal, a recurring issue throughout their campaign.

He also pointed out that while his team managed to play through Hull’s press, they lacked the quality in the final third to turn possession into clear chances. Despite the shortcomings, Pedersen praised his players’ effort.

Sheffield Wednesday will now pause for the international break before returning for the final stretch of the season, beginning with an away trip to Stoke City on April 3.
