Sheffield Wednesday could profit from Djedi Gassama’s Rangers exit as £10m transfer discussed

Sheffield Wednesday’s financial chiefs will be monitoring growing reports that former player Djedi Gassama could be set for a move away from Rangers.

The energetic young attacker joined Rangers from Wednesday in a bargain summer deal completed in July, as the Owls were dealing with financial turmoil during the collapse of Dejphon Chansiri’s leadership.

The transfer was said to be worth around £2.2m and came only months after then-manager Danny Röhl — who has since taken charge at Ibrox — indicated the club might one day secure a significant fee for the French winger.

A former PSG academy product, Gassama adapted quickly despite Rangers’ shaky start to the season and has become a regular under Röhl, with the side now sitting four points behind league leaders Hearts. He netted his seventh goal for the club in the weekend’s 3–0 victory over Dundee and has added three assists in 39 appearances.

Reports in Scotland now claim Champions League side Monaco are interested in bringing the 22-year-old back to France. The proposed move is said to involve an initial loan with an obligation to buy next season for £10m. Röhl is believed to be keen to retain Gassama as Rangers prepare for the crucial second half of their title challenge.

It’s understood that Wednesday inserted a sell-on clause in the original deal, meaning they would receive a percentage of any profit Rangers make on a future transfer.

The exact figure is not yet known. The situation mirrors Anthony Musaba’s exit from South Yorkshire to Turkish club Samsunspor last summer.

later joined Fenerbahçe in a move that is believed to entitle Wednesday to 10% of any profit — although such payments can often be delayed and depend heavily on the structure of transfer agreements.
