Sheffield Wednesday development set to deal major blow to Middlesbrough keeper Seny Dieng

Seny Dieng’s brief spell at Sheffield Wednesday looks set to come to an end, with Pierce Charles nearing a return from injury. The Middlesbrough goalkeeper has spent the past two weeks at Hillsborough on an emergency loan after the Owls were left without a senior keeper due to injuries.

Initially signed for one week, the deal was extended for another seven days last Friday. Dieng has since made three appearances for Henrik Pedersen’s relegated Championship side, earning praise for his performances despite all three matches ending in defeat.

Whether he remains in South Yorkshire for another week remains uncertain. However, his time appears limited, as Wednesday will no longer be allowed to keep an emergency loan goalkeeper once Charles is declared fit — something that could happen as soon as this weekend.

Providing an update to The Star, Pedersen said Charles had shown no reaction in his shoulder following training and could return within the next two games.

Dieng was not included in Middlesbrough’s 25-man EFL squad, meaning that unless he secures a move abroad — potentially to MLS where the transfer window remains open — he will return to Teesside without being eligible to play.

Speaking after joining Wednesday, Dieng admitted he was thrilled by the opportunity, saying he was eager to get back into action after a lengthy spell out.

The Owls could extend the emergency deal by one more week to allow Charles to complete his rehabilitation, which would see Dieng feature against Derby County and Watford. However, with Charles close to full fitness, Dieng’s season may effectively be over.
