Barry Bannan Injury Update Ahead of Sheffield Wednesday vs Derby County
Sheffield Wednesday skipper Barry Bannan suffered an injury during Tuesday’s 1-1 draw at Watford, but he could still feature in Monday’s Championship clash with Derby County, according to The Star.
The Scotland international had played almost every minute of Wednesday’s campaign so far, enjoying an impressive season in which he leads the team in chance creation and ranks among the top five in expected assists (xA) across the league.
Bannan was substituted at halftime for youngster Sean Fusire at Vicarage Road, raising concerns about whether a groin problem would rule him out for the televised match against Derby. Manager Henrik Pedersen described it as too early to determine the injury’s severity. However, The Star understands that Bannan has not been ruled out and could make the matchday squad, potentially playing a role in the game. The additional two days of recovery have given the Owls some time to recuperate, although squad rotation remains a concern.
Midfield partner Yan Valery will miss the clash, as Tunisia declined the club’s request to delay his travel to the African Cup of Nations. Zimbabwe, on the other hand, has allowed Sean Fusire to remain with the squad a day longer.
The fixture congestion has also led medical staff to advise limiting minutes for up to five senior players. New signing Nathan Redmond has joined the list of injured players and faces missing the remainder of his short-term contract due to injury, adding to the Owls’ already stretched squad.
