Shock move: Rangers fast-track deal for Liverpool star

Luca Stephenson is poised to return to Liverpool FC at the end of his loan spell at Dundee United FC, with hopes of impressing manager Arne Slot, sources have told Football Insider.

The 22-year-old right-back has caught the eye of Rangers FC after two strong seasons at Tannadice Park, but Stephenson’s priority appears to be staking a claim at Anfield ahead of pre-season. While Rangers could make a move to keep him in Scotland, Liverpool are reportedly keen to test his progress themselves.

According to Football Insider’s Transfer Insider podcast, Stephenson is highly regarded at Liverpool, and a permanent departure this summer is not guaranteed. Rangers may need to explore other options as the situation remains fluid. Both Old Firm clubs have followed his development closely, impressed by his performances in the Scottish Premiership, but it’s Liverpool who hold the cards on his future.

“I don’t think Liverpool will rush any decision on Stephenson,” the podcast explained. “He’ll return for pre-season aiming to impress, hoping his loan performances have earned him a chance in the first team. But if Liverpool are willing to sell, they will demand a significant fee.”

Rangers, meanwhile, continue to value leadership at the club, with veteran captain James Tavernier, 34, expected to be offered a new deal despite no formal talks yet, underlining the balance the club is seeking between youth recruitment and experienced leadership.
