Shock Name Emerges as Southampton’s Leading Candidate to Replace Will Still

Southampton Identify Former Boss Russell Martin as Shock Top Choice to Replace Will Still

Former Southampton manager Russell Martin has surprisingly emerged as the club’s top target to replace Will Still, according to a report from TEAMtalk.

The Saints confirmed Still’s departure on Sunday after just six months in charge, ending his brief tenure with only two wins from twelve Championship matches. His side currently sits 21st in the table, only three points above the relegation zone.

Now, Southampton are keen to bring back Martin — the coach who guided them to Premier League promotion in the 2023/24 campaign following a memorable 1-0 play-off final victory over Leeds United at Wembley.

Martin, 39, enjoyed a 47% win rate during his first stint at St Mary’s, impressing with his possession-based style. However, that same approach came under criticism during the club’s Premier League struggles, which led to his dismissal in December 2024.

After a brief spell at Rangers, where he managed just a 29% win rate, Martin is now open to discussions about a return to the South Coast.

TEAMtalk adds that the Saints’ hierarchy and several senior players remain admirers of Martin’s methods, with Michael Carrick and Brendan Rodgers also on the club’s shortlist.

Southampton’s technical director Johannes Spors said Still’s dismissal was made to “give the team the best chance of turning things around this season.”
