“Should Celtic have had a penalty here”? – Charlie Mulgrew slams Kris Boyd over Celtic FC player Kyogo Furuhashi denied penalty kick against Kilmarnock

Following their 4-0 win over Kilmarnock at Parkhead yesterday, Celtic got off to a great start in their defense of the Scottish Premiership title.

Reo Hatate, Liam Scales, Nicolas Kuhn, and Anthony Ralston scored goals to help the Bhoys beat Kilmarnock and move to the top of the table. It was almost a perfect game for them.

The game went on as planned thanks to referee Don Robertson, but there was one thing that made Charlie Mulgrew and Kris Boyd argue in the Sky Sports studio after the game was over.

After Robbie McCrorie, Kilmarnock’s goalie, hit Kyogo Furuhashi, Celtic should have been given a penalty kick.

The judge waved play on, and VAR didn’t look into it. Please look at the event here:

After the win, people talked about whether or not Celtic should have been given the penalty. When the former Rangers star Boyd tried to explain why the penalty wasn’t given, Mulgrew scolded him.

Mulgrew said, “To begin with, what a ball from Matt O’Riley!” What a creative and imaginative idea, and it’s definitely a punishment.

“He touched it, and if he doesn’t get fouled, he was going to tap it in.” The goalie comes over and hits him.

“The goalkeeper made a mistake, and Kyogo had a great touch, so he got hit.” It is a punishment. It’s always a penalty, no matter what the score is.

Boyd said, “People will say this because you’re speaking for Celtic. I can also see why it wasn’t given; where is the goalkeeper supposed to go?”

“As I said, it’s a penalty kick for me. I’m going to argue with myself about this, but it’s touched and then hit.”

“I think it’s touch and then bang right away.” Robert McCrorie is supposed to go somewhere, but I don’t know where it is.

Mulgrew said, “He should stay on his line if he’s going to come out and hit people, or he’ll get in trouble.”

I’m sure it was a penalty, and Boyd’s explanation about where the goalkeeper should go doesn’t work.

If someone challenges you in a way that isn’t fair or clean, it’s risky and a foul. How McCrorie got there is not the question; the question is, “What was he thinking?”

The Kilmarnock goalkeeper hit the Celtic scorer at the wrong time and knocked him out. It didn’t really matter in the end because the score was already very clear, but as Mulgrew points out, that shouldn’t affect how the rules of the game are applied, and it looks like Robertson missed a simple call this time.

The argument will without a doubt go on, but what will be interesting is to see if this kind of issue will be dealt with in the same way in the future.
