After the controversial Wayne Rooney incident, Sir Alex Ferguson prohibited Manchester United from participating in the pre-season tournament. After Wayne Rooney was embroiled in a controversial incident, Sir Alex Ferguson declared that Manchester United would never participate in the Amsterdam Tournament again.
In the summer of 2006, United continued their pre-season preparations by travelling to the Netherlands to compete against Ajax and Porto in the annual Amsterdam Tournament. Rooney was dismissed for a trailing arm that appeared to impact Porto defender Pepe, but he maintained that the challenge was not malicious.
Ferguson made a promise to the organisers of the pre-season tournament after the full-time siren, in a state of fury. “You can bet your life that we will not be participating in the Amsterdam tournament again,” he stated. “In these circumstances, the referee is responsible.” Your expectation is that common sense will prevail. Rather, he has reported the matter,
which has since been addressed through the appropriate channels. The FA has elected to pursue the matter. Their eventual triumph in the competition was overshadowed by a controversial dismissal of Wayne Rooney by Dutch referee Ruud Bossen during the inaugural game against Porto.”I am devastated by that decision,”
Rooney disclosed to The Sun. “I am deeply disheartened by the prospect of missing any games due to that.” It was an error to dismiss me. I would never wish to miss a game, and I would surely not do so due to a decision that was so harsh. He further stated, “It is evident from the video that my attention was solely focused on the ball.”
Rooney expressed his dissatisfaction with the current condition of officiating and declared that he would not alter his approach to the game. “Regrettably, football is becoming increasingly characterised by the inability to physically interact with an opponent,” he continued. “You are now witnessing red cards that were not even considered fouls in the past.”
I am disappointed with the outcome; however, you must continue. “My approach to the game of football will remain unchanged,” he concluded. “I am resolute.” I aspire to emerge victorious in each and every challenge that I undertake. The Amsterdam Tournament was subsequently abolished three years later.
