Sky sports 56-year-old pundit Paul Merson gave his assessments on what Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden was missing during Euro 2024 tournament

Last season, Phil Foden experienced his most successful individual campaign at Manchester City.

Foden scored 19 goals and provided eight assists in 35 Premier League appearances for Pep Guardiola’s team, which won their fourth consecutive league trophy.

This resulted in the 24-year-old being named Premier League Player of the Season and being selected for the England squad for the 2024 European Championship.

Foden, who has started all seven of England’s games in the tournament, has now been mentioned by a pundit who has shared his opinions on the City star’s efforts in his latest international tournament with the Three Lions.

“I am a fervent supporter of Foden, and [Jude] Bellingham has performed exceptionally well; however, you are evaluating the two of them.” Harry Kane is incapable of fulfilling the task. You could discern when we were observing. Therefore, you are evaluating the two for their X-factor, and they simply did not provide us with enough of it in the events.
Paul Merson discusses the absence of Phil Foden during the 2024 Euros.

Sky sports 56-year-old pundit Paul Merson gave his assessments on what Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden was missing during Euro 2024 tournament

In a recent episode of Football’s Greatest, Paul Merson expressed his opinion on Foden when asked about the significance of international teams having systems and tactics rather than relying on individual moments of brilliance. He was reflecting on England’s performance in the tournament.

He stated, “You must establish a system.” It is imperative to adhere to a system; however, the X factor must also be incorporated into the system. It is imperative to have athletes who are capable of generating unconventional results. I did not believe that we had that with England.

Foden encountered difficulties in achieving success during the Euros.
Foden was unable to score a goal or provide an assist for Gareth Southgate’s team, despite being one of the eight players to start all of England’s games in the tournament. Merson had previously expressed his sorrow for Foden during the competition.

Despite the fact that the City star had the second-highest number of attempts at goal (13) in the Three Lions squad, it is evident from his lack of goal contributions that he was unable to be as clinical in the tournament as he was for his club last season.

In the future, the disappointment he experienced from not winning the tournament and not demonstrating his offensive ability should serve as motivation for the upcoming season, despite his arrival at the final.
