Sky Sports issued an immediate retraction following Liverpool’s comments made by Virgil van Dijk during the Carabao Cup final. Minutes prior to the commencement of the Carabao Cup final between Newcastle United and Liverpool, Sky Sports was compelled to issue an apology.
The broadcaster held the rights to the Wembley Stadium showpiece, which was also being transmitted for free on ITV. Liverpool had secured their spot in the final by defeating Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 on aggregate in the semi-final. In the interim, Newcastle had defeated Arsenal 4-0 on aggregate in their semi-final, thereby securing a meeting with Arne Slot’s team.
The Sky cameras were in close proximity to the Liverpool huddle, and they captured a portion of Van Dijk’s message to the Reds players. Sky would subsequently issue an apology for the profane language that was detected in the broadcast audio as a result of this message. Van Dijk was heard addressing the Liverpool squad,
“We have worked tirelessly to achieve this position.” “Is our team prepared for the required effort?” I suggest that we collaborate on this endeavour. Peter Drury, who was responsible for commentary for Sky Sports and ITV, later apologised to the viewers of the cup final for the language that was detected during the broadcast.
