Southampton ‘agree deal’ to bring back club legend on a free transfer — Fabrizio Romano reports.

Fabrizio Romano: Southampton Set to Re-Sign Club Legend Oriol Romeu on a Free Transfer

Southampton are reportedly closing in on the sensational return of former midfielder Oriol Romeu on a free transfer, according to GIVEMESPORT senior reporter Fabrizio Romano.

The Saints, who are currently without a manager following the dismissal of Will Still on Sunday evening, are preparing to strengthen their squad with the addition of the 34-year-old ex-Barcelona man. Romano revealed on X (formerly Twitter)that the deal is set to bring Romeu back to St Mary’s, offering a much-needed boost to a side languishing near the bottom of the Championship table.

Romeu, a fan favourite during his previous spell with the club, has been a free agent since parting ways with Barcelona in the summer. His contract was terminated after spending the 2024–25 season on loan at Girona, where he played a key role in their surprise top-flight campaign.

Southampton’s midfield options have been stretched in recent weeks, with Shea Charles sidelined by a hamstring injury and Flynn Downes struggling for fitness due to illness and minor knocks. As a result, Joe Aribo was recalled for the weekend defeat to Preston North End, while youngster Kuryu Matsuki was handed a rare appearance after limited involvement this season.

After suffering relegation from the Premier League last term, Southampton were tipped to mount an immediate promotion push. However, a disastrous start — just two wins from 13 league games — saw Will Still dismissed and left the club sitting 21st in the Championship.

The potential return of Romeu, combined with the imminent appointment of a new manager, could mark the beginning of a much-needed turnaround at St Mary’s. Club owners Sport Republic and Dragan Solak will hope the experienced Spaniard’s leadership and composure in midfield can help steady the ship and guide the Saints back up the table in the coming months.
