The former Rangers midfielder has found game time hard to come by at St Mary’s this season and could be on the move when the January window opens.
As Danny Röhl prepares to reinforce his Rangers squad this month, a familiar name could be edging closer to a return to Ibrox.
Rangers’ convincing 2-0 victory over Aberdeen on Tuesday night saw them climb above Celtic in the Premiership table for the first time this season, moving to within touching distance of leaders Hearts despite having played a game more.
While Connor Barron and Nicolas Raskin dominated midfield against the Dons, Röhl is still keen to add further depth in that area. One potential option is former Ibrox favourite Joe Aribo, who has endured an inconsistent spell since joining Southampton from Rangers in 2022.

The Nigerian international is expected to be made available this winter after struggling for regular minutes on the south coast. However, any potential exit will depend on Southampton manager Tonda Eckert, who is believed to hold Aribo in high regard.
Speaking to the Daily Echo, Eckert said:
“Every player has to be assessed individually. There’s a story behind each one that started long before I arrived. We need to decide what’s best for the club first, but also what’s best for the player and the group.”
Aribo has fondly remembered moments at Rangers, including scoring in the Europa League final and playing a key role in the club’s long-awaited title triumph.
But consistency has eluded him at Southampton, where he has failed to feature in the Saints’ last six matches.
