Southampton managerial update: Gary O’Neil linked as Russell Martin return rumours grow

Southampton are progressing in their talks with Gary O’Neil over the vacant managerial position, according to sources from Football Insider.

O’Neil, who recently withdrew from discussions to become Wolves’ new head coach, is now the leading contender to replace Will Still, who was dismissed on 2 November following a poor start to the season. The Saints currently sit 17th in the Championship after a dismal run of form.

Discussions are said to be moving quickly, though Norwich City are also monitoring O’Neil after parting ways with Liam Manning.

Meanwhile, Southampton’s board has cooled its interest in former boss Russell Martin. While initial plans were made to approach the 39-year-old for a dramatic return, sources now indicate that support for his comeback has weakened.

Interim manager Eckert has impressed with back-to-back wins over QPR and Sheffield Wednesday, and his chances of earning the full-time role could improve with continued positive results.
