Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu is on the verge of completing a loan move to Championship rivals Stoke City for the remainder of the season, according to The Independent.
The Republic of Ireland international appears to have slipped down the pecking order at St Mary’s following the arrival of Bayern Munich stopper Daniel Peretz.
The Israeli goalkeeper was immediately installed as first choice after joining on loan and started at the weekend, signalling manager Tonda Eckert’s intention to make him a key figure.
With Alex McCarthy also available as an experienced backup, Bazunu’s departure would not significantly weaken Southampton’s goalkeeping options.
The former Manchester City man was notably absent from the matchday squad against Doncaster Rovers, with McCarthy named on the bench instead.
Reports suggest Bazunu is already in Stoke as talks progress over a loan switch that would include an £8 million option to buy.
Stoke have been forced into the market following a serious injury to first-choice keeper Viktor Johansson.
Bazunu has featured 19 times in the Championship this season but has faced criticism for inconsistent performances, prompting Southampton to move quickly to strengthen in goal.
With Peretz expected to take over as number one, Bazunu now looks set for a fresh start under Mark Robins at the bet365 Stadium.
