One man who used to play for Newcastle United won the Champions League with Real Madrid earlier this month.

Rafa Benitez has explained why Joselu didn’t do well at St. James’ Park after moving there for £5 million from Stoke City. In 53 games for Newcastle United over two years, Joselu only scored seven goals. He then moved back to Spain to join Deportivo Alaves.

After Newcastle was promoted from the Championship, Benitez signed the 34-year-old and put him in charge of the attack as they tried to get to the bottom of the Premier League table. Speaking to AS, Benitez explained why Joselu didn’t do well in the Premier League, saying that the need for his team to be tactically strong was to blame: This league moves quickly and has a lot of flow. It was Benitez. “Because of how our club works, our team was the star in the Championship. But in the Premier, we had to play more on the counterattack.”

“The other forwards got used to playing in the Premier League better than Joselu. He helped us a lot in the air and especially when we were in charge.” It was always easy for him to handle, pass, and shoot the ball when it was close to the goal.

Since he left Newcastle United in 2019, Joselu has been in great scoring form. He has scored 10 or more goals in each of his last five La Liga seasons, even though he has often played for teams near the bottom of the league. Because of this, Joselu signed with Real Madrid and helped them win the Champions League by beating Borussia Dortmund at Wembley earlier this month. He was also called up to Spain’s Euro 2024 team.
