Artificial turf will no longer be used by teams in the Scottish Premiership after a resolution was brought to them at Hampden this week.
Celtic fans have been annoyed by plastic fields for a long time. Both former manager Ange Postecoglou and current manager Brendan Rodgers have spoken out against them.
In March, Rodgers said that he was “hopeful” that they would soon be a thing of the past in the Premiership. On Friday afternoon, the SPFL posted a statement that made his wish come true.
“Clubs in the Premiership had brought forward a resolution seeking to phase out artificial pitches in Scotland’s top division,” the league said. “This resolution was sent to all Premiership clubs.” There is proof from the SPFL that the motion has been passed.
“The Scottish Premier Football League (SPFL) Board has given clubs with artificial pitches two years to plan for the end of artificial pitches in the top level of Scottish football.”
“This grace period is in line with what the SPFL Competitions Working Group, which is made up of clubs from across the SPFL, has said should happen.”
It was recently approved by the SPFL Board that the whole Premiership will work with a top pitch consulting company (often used by UEFA) to make the grass pitches in the cinch Premiership better.
“Prime League clubs will work with the SPFL on this project before the new season.”
As of now, there is only one artificial field in the Premiership for the 2024–25 season. That is Kilmarnock’s pitch at Rugby Park.
The Ayrshire team had already said they wanted to move from their current pitch, but this decision means that teams promoted from lower leagues will have to put in a grass surface that can be used.
Of course, Scotland has other pitch problems as well. Recent problems with Dundee could have caused schedule problems for the league, so it’s good to hear that the SPFL is also working to fix that.
It is better to play football on better fields, which should help Celtic in the long run. There is no doubt that many Bhoys fans will be happy about it.
