Sport pundit Ally McCoist brutally slams the 21-year-old forward Youssef Chermiti’s after their match performance against Roma (0-2)

Ally McCoist Slams Youssef Chermiti After Poor Display in Rangers’ Defeat to Roma

Rangers legend Ally McCoist has delivered a scathing assessment of Youssef Chermiti’s performance following the club’s 2-0 defeat to AS Roma at Ibrox, claiming the young striker was “miles off it.”

It was another difficult European night for Rangers, who suffered their fourth straight loss in the group stage. Having already faced Genk, Sturm Graz, and Brann, the Scottish side remain rooted to the bottom of their group with zero points — a stark reflection of their decline on the continental stage.

McCoist: “Rangers Are Getting Worse”

Speaking on TNT Sports, McCoist expressed his frustration over the club’s downward spiral, pointing to poor recruitment as the root cause.

“Have Rangers signed anybody better than what they’ve let go? I don’t think they have,” McCoist said. “I’d include Leon Balogun at centre-back — I think he’s better than what Rangers have now.”

Balogun, 37, left Ibrox for Aris Limassol on a free transfer earlier this year, and McCoist believes his absence typifies the club’s regression.

Turning his attention to Rangers’ forward line, McCoist singled out Chermiti, who joined from Everton for £10 million during the summer.

“You lose Cerny, Dessers, Igamane — that’s 60-plus goals out of your team,” he said. “The big lad, Chermiti… I really hope he comes good, but right now he’s miles off it — miles off it.”

Struggling to Find His Feet

The 21-year-old striker arrived in Glasgow with high expectations, billed as a replacement for Cyriel Dessers and Hamza Igamane, who departed for Lille and Panathinaikos respectively. But Chermiti has found life in Scotland difficult, managing just one goal in 12 appearances so far.

With fan frustration mounting and European hopes all but gone, McCoist’s comments echo a growing sentiment among supporters — that Rangers’ recruitment strategy has left the club stagnating at a time when improvement was essential.
