Sports pundit Aaron McLean delivers his verdict over Regan Poole challenge on Scott Twine during Portsmouth vs Bristol City match clash

Pompey faced Bristol City at Fratton Park today, and referee Sam Allison made a crucial call just 45 seconds into the Championship match — one Sky Sports pundit Aaron McLean believes he got spot on.

The incident saw Scott Twine go to ground after what looked like contact from Pompey defender Regan Poole. With the Fratton Park crowd holding its breath, Allison took a moment to assess the situation before waving play on, deciding no foul had occurred — a decision that brought clear relief from the home supporters.

Twine, however, was visibly frustrated, pounding the turf in disappointment.

McLean agreed with the referee’s assessment, saying:
“It’s a huge call so early on. Without VAR we can’t review it, but I really think the referee made the correct decision.”

With Pompey in danger of slipping into the bottom three depending on other results, the early let-off was welcomed — though it didn’t prevent them from falling behind. Anis Mehmeti put Bristol City ahead with a header in the 17th minute.

After watching the TV replays, McLean doubled down on his view:
“I was expecting the referee to blow for a penalty, but seeing it again, I think he’s right. Twine just stumbles.”
