Youssef Chermiti has sparked fury from Kris Boyd following Rangers’ 2-2 draw with Dundee United on Saturday evening.
Thelo Aasgaard opened his Rangers account with a fine first-half strike to give the home side the lead, but Dundee United fought back after the break to go 2-1 up. Captain James Tavernier then rescued a late point with an 87th-minute goal, extending the Gers’ unbeaten Premiership run to three matches.
Despite a number of positives from the display, Chermiti’s performance once again left fans and pundits puzzled.
Kris Boyd slams Rangers signing Youssef Chermiti
The £8 million summer signing from Everton has endured a tough start to life at Ibrox, and his latest outing did little to ease concerns. Brought on by interim manager Steven Smith in the 71st minute, the 21-year-old struggled to make any real impact — completing only three accurate passes and managing just nine touches overall, with just one inside Dundee United’s penalty area.
Still waiting for his first goal since joining the club, Chermiti has quickly become a target of criticism. Speaking live on Sky Sports, former Rangers striker Kris Boyd didn’t hold back in his assessment.
“I hate to say it, but I don’t see what Chermiti offers. For £8 million, you have to come in and dominate. You should be one of the league’s best players at that price, but right now, he wouldn’t even make Rangers’ starting XI,” Boyd said.
The criticism also adds to the growing pressure on sporting director Kevin Thelwell, who oversaw Chermiti’s transfer. Thelwell previously worked with the Portuguese striker at Everton — a connection that makes the move appear even more questionable given the player’s lack of contribution.
Since his arrival, Chermiti has failed to live up to expectations, and the hefty fee that made him Rangers’ second-most expensive signing now looks increasingly difficult to justify. Many fans and pundits believe it could turn out to be one of Thelwell’s worst pieces of business to date.
