Steven Gerrard outlines requirements for potential Rangers comeback after turning down Ibrox role

Steven Gerrard has explained why he chose to withdraw from the race to return as Rangers manager, insisting he would only consider a comeback if the right support and resources were in place.

The former Rangers boss, who famously ended Celtic’s domestic dominance by guiding the club to their first Scottish Premiership title in ten years, was widely viewed as the leading candidate to replace Russell Martin after his dismissal in October.

Despite positive discussions between both parties, Gerrard ultimately decided the timing and circumstances were not right.

Although he turned down the opportunity, Gerrard has not closed the door on a future return to Ibrox. Speaking openly about what would be required for him to take the role again, he stressed the importance of having the correct structure around him.

Gerrard said he still feels a strong connection to Rangers and wants to see the club succeed, but acknowledged the scale of the challenge involved. He explained that without the right people and tools in place, even confidence in his own abilities would not be enough to deliver success.

Rangers have endured a difficult campaign and currently sit fourth in the Scottish Premiership, nine points behind leaders Hearts.

After Gerrard stepped aside, Danny Rohl was appointed and has remained upbeat about the team’s prospects.

Rohl believes improvement in consistency and efficiency at both ends of the pitch could allow Rangers to take significant steps forward before the season ends.

He pointed to encouraging signs within the squad but admitted there is still work to be done to maintain performance levels across the full 90 minutes.
