Sutton and Boyd slam Danny Rohl’s conduct towards Luke McCowan after stalemate

Chris Sutton and Kris Boyd questioned Danny Rohl’s decision to publicly respond to comments made by Luke McCowan before Celtic’s dramatic 2-2 draw with Rangers F.C. at Ibrox.

McCowan had claimed that “no team in that league touches us” when Celtic are on form — remarks Sutton admitted he did not agree with. However, the former striker was more puzzled by why Rohl chose to involve himself in the debate in the first place.

Sutton suggested that, as a Rangers fan, he would be more concerned about his manager entering a public back-and-forth with an opposition player rather than focusing solely on the match. He dismissed McCowan’s statement as irrelevant talk, arguing that what truly matters is who wins the league at the end of the season — not bold pre-match claims.

Boyd echoed that view, saying there was “no need” for Rohl to comment on McCowan’s remarks or other matters involving Celtic, including discussion around their European fixtures and goalkeeping situation. He warned that in Glasgow, such comments often get amplified and can “come back to bite you” if results do not follow.

Their criticism came after Celtic recovered from a 2-0 deficit to earn a draw, a result that shifted the post-match narrative. Boyd pointed out that while Rohl may have felt comfortable at half-time, the turnaround left him complaining about decisions by full-time — something the pundits felt undermined his earlier stance.

With another derby looming in the Scottish Cup, where a winner must be decided, attention will once again turn to Rohl’s pre-match messaging and whether he adopts a different approach next time.
