Arsenal has been keeping an eye on Sporting striker Viktor Gyokeres since the former Coventry City player went to Lisbon for £21 million in the summer of 2017.
In Sporting’s first game back since winning the title, they beat Porto on Friday night with a goal from Viktor Gyokeres.
He scored the third goal in a 3-1 win at home against Rio Ave. Gyokeres, who is 26 years old, played the whole game. The Swedish player did miss Sporting’s first two preseason matches, against Union Saint-Gilloise and Sevilla. He didn’t play again until two weeks ago, against Athletic Club.
After playing for an hour in that game, he played the whole Portuguese Super Cup and set up two goals, though Porto won 4-3 in extra time. But after six days, Gyokeres went from setting up goals to scoring them.
The player put a picture of himself on his Instagram story after the game. “Let’s go,” Gyokeres wrote as a comment, adding a lion emoji to finish the sentence. The team’s nickname comes from this animal.
This summer, the scorer hasn’t said much about his future. The last time he did, it was after Sporting won the league in early May.
“Ruben Amorim is a great coach, and I wouldn’t mind if he stayed (laughs)” Gyokeres said (b/r). “I’ve had a lot of teachers, but by far the most important was Ruben Amorim, who brought me here.
“Thank you, Sports fans. I’ll see you soon. What can I say? It’s sport, and I have a contract. If I leave, I won’t be sad; I’m very happy, but we’ll see what happens. “We don’t know what will happen next year, but we’ll see.”
Those statements came two months after he talked about the rumors about his future during the March international break. Gyokeres told Fotbollskanalen, “It means I’ve done a good job.” I don’t take it too seriously, though, because it’s just a guess. It is fun, though.
“We’ll see in the summer.” What will happen isn’t something I know about myself; I enjoy sports a lot and don’t feel stressed about how quickly summer is coming up.
