Brad Holmes, the general manager of the Detroit Lions, talked about the one player he wishes he had picked up in the NFL Draft.
Brad Holmes has done a great job building the Detroit Lions team through the draft since he became general manager.
Holmes was in charge of his fifth NFL Draft this year. In the four drafts before this one, he picked 13 players who will start for the team this season when everyone is okay.
They’ve been named to a lot of Pro Bowls and All-Pro teams and have been a big part of the team’s rise to the top of the game.
Holmes still wishes he had picked one man for the Lions, even though he has been successful.
Holmes recently talked on the “This Is Football” show with ESPN’s Kevin Clark about the Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Puka Nacua as the player he wishes he had picked up in the draft.
The Rams picked Nacua with the 177th overall pick in the fifth round of the 2023 draft, and it was a great choice for them. He got 1486 yards, which was more than any other rookie in NFL history. He was named an All-Pro because of that.
He could only play in 11 games last year, but he still caught 79 passes for an average of 90 yards per game.
The Lions picked someone in the fifth round of that draft, but they haven’t been as successful.
With the 152nd pick in the 2023 draft, Detroit chose offensive centre Colby Sorsdal. As a rookie, he played in 16 games, but in 2024, he didn’t play a single offensive snap.
He is now on the season-ending IR for the 2025 season.
I think the Lions thought at the time that they didn’t need Nacua. They had already spent a first-round pick on Jameson Williams a year before on Amon-Ra St. Brown, who was doing very well. Also, Josh Reynolds was still a good third choice at the position in 2023.
Still, it would have been fun to see what the Lions’ offence could have done with Nacua, St. Brown, and Williams working together. But I think Holmes deserves a pass for missing out on Nacua while he was with the Lions.
