The Blades manager Chris Wilder reveals Sheffield United’s January transfer focus following crucial discussions with owners

Chris Wilder has confirmed that Sheffield United will prioritise quality over quantity in the January transfer window following important discussions with the club’s owners.

The Blades manager and his recruitment team have already identified “three or four” players they believe can strengthen the squad as Wilder continues to reshape the group after his return earlier this season.

Wilder has repeatedly spoken about the size of the squad he inherited in September after replacing Ruben Selles, whose short-lived reign ended after just six league games.

While numbers are high, several areas require attention, particularly right-back, where Femi Seriki is currently the only specialist option, and midfield, which has been hit hard by injuries to players such as Tom Davies and Sydie Peck.

A recent availability crisis has underlined the need for reinforcements, something Wilder says was clearly communicated during meetings with the board.

The manager and chief executive Stephen Bettis have since presented their January plans to the club’s owners, who will now decide whether to approve the proposed improvements.

Wilder stressed that he is not seeking a major overhaul but rather targeted additions capable of making an immediate impact. He also acknowledged that several loan players will return to their parent clubs, meaning replacements must be players ready to compete for starting roles.

Despite Sheffield United’s current position, Wilder remains confident the club remains an attractive destination and believes the right additions can drive further progress in the second half of the season.
