February 27, 2025** – Taylor Decker, the left tackle for the Detroit Lions, has been signed to a four-year contract extension worth $72 million, with $40 million guaranteed, in anticipation of the 2025 offseason. The veteran lineman, who will turn 32 later this year and was expected to enter free agency in 2026, has signed a contract with Honolulu Blue that will extend through the 2029 season. The announcement was made on Thursday.
Decker, a first-round selection from Ohio State in the 2016 NFL Draft, has been a fundamental member of Detroit’s offensive line for nearly a decade. Since joining the Lions, he has started 119 games and is renowned for his tenacity and durability, gaining a reputation as one of the league’s most underrated blindside protectors. Decker anchored a line that propelled the Lions to a top-five rushing attack, supporting stars
like David Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, and allowed only three sacks during his 2024 season, which served as yet another testament to his value. He played in all 17 games. The Detroit Lions’ offensive line must make good on their investment, according to Taylor Decker. Decker’s extension, which averages $18 million annually, positions him among the highest-paid left tackles in the NFL.
This figure has elicited eyebrows due to his age and the Lions’ existing substantial investments in right tackle Penei Sewell ($112 million) and quarterback Jared Goff ($212 million). After a 12-5 season and a playoff berth in 2024, Detroit’s general manager, Brad Holmes, seems to be committed to preserving the continuity of the offensive line,
which has become the foundation of the team’s rugged identity under head coach Dan Campbell. Holmes stated in a statement, “Taylor is the glue up front.” “He is a leader, a tone-setter, and he is currently playing some of the best football of his career.” This ensures the stability of our foundation.
