The Detroit Lions are making a big mistake by not extending Aidan Hutchinson’s deal right away.
The Detroit Lions are going to give Aidan Hutchinson a huge pay rise one day.
It’s going to happen.
In his first two years in the NFL, he had 21 sacks. Before getting hurt in Week 5, he was on track for 25.5 last season.
It looks like the Lions have to change the rules at practice so the offence can get more runs because they can’t stop him.
It was just today that Brad Holmes said Hutchinson and the Lions haven’t “had really any intense talks yet.”
“Look, we’ll definitely start talking soon,” Holmes said on 97.1 The Ticket. “But those things take time, especially when the deal is big.”
Because of that, that person will always get paid well for his job, so why are the Lions still waiting to lock up this deal?
This is a big mistake.
This summer, big deals for Max Crosby, Myles Garrett, and T.J. Watt have caused edge rusher salaries to go through the roof. Since the pay cap keeps going up and Micah Parson is ready to get paid, they will only keep getting bigger.
He should be at least one of the top three paid edge players when Hutchinson gets his extension. If not the highest-paid edge player overall.
Why would you wait and let that number keep going up?
It should be pretty easy to work out this deal. Watt makes $41 million a year, which is more than any other player at the position. With an extra two million dollars, the Lions should be able to make a deal with Hutchinson.
When the deal starts in two years, the pay cap will have gone up, and contracts all over the league will have begun to catch up.
Depending on how Hutchinson plays in 2025, the Lions might have to pay him close to $50 million per year if they wait. This is because the market could change, especially if Parson signs a new deal that changes the market.
The Lions will lose money if they wait to make a deal. You would think that a team that has been very careful with their money this summer would want to save as much as they can.
