The FA has released footage of Alexander Isak and Fabian Schar in response to the costly decisions taken by Newcastle United. Yankuba Minteh negated Alexander Isak’s penalty in the first half, and Danny Welbeck secured the victory in extra time.

The recently implemented semi-automated offside technology also resulted in Newcastle’s two goals being disallowed for offside. The offside flag and a SAOT check resulted in Isak’s goal being disallowed, despite his belief that he had made it 2-0 in the match. In stoppage time, Fabian Schar scored a goal that would have given Newcastle a 2-1 lead. However, SAOT intervened and disallowed the goal due to offside.

The FA Cup’s official X account released the footage of the disallowed goals and the SAOT graphic verifying the decision after each incident. The offside flag had already nullified Isak’s goal, but Schar’s was initially awarded on the pitch. Consequently, referee Anthony Taylor announced the decision to disallow the goal over the stadium PA.

The introduction of the new technology in 2024-25 was affirmed in the 2024-25 Premier League handbook; however, it has been postponed. Insofar as the club is responsible for the maintenance of

“goal line technology, semi-automated offside technology, and VAR installed at its Stadium,” the handbook mandates that clubs adhere to all applicable requirements. The Premier League’s concern regarding the efficacy of semi-automated technology has resulted in a delay in its introduction,

which was anticipated to occur during the initial months of the season. The system was implemented for the fifth round of the FA Cup in March. “SAOT will produce virtual graphics to ensure an improved in-stadium and broadcast experience for supporters, as well as more efficient placement of the virtual offside line based on optical player tracking.”

“The accuracy of the decision-making process is not affected by the operation of semi-automated offside technology; rather, it is improved in terms of speed, efficiency, and consistency.” The Premier League has collaborated with PGMOL and sports data and technology company Genius Sports to create a new SAOT system, which will be implemented for the first time in a live competition.
