‘You never know’ – Former Liverpool and Newcastle United player contemplates unexpected retirementA former Newcastle United custodian has disclosed his future plans.
Loris Karius, the former custodian of Newcastle United, has acknowledged that he is in the process of seeking a new club, nearly six months after being released by the Magpies.
He has also expressed the possibility of retiring. When United manager Eddie Howe signed a short-term contract with the German goalkeeper in September 2022, it was somewhat unexpected.
Karius signed a contract extension that would keep him on Tyneside until the conclusion of the season, when the Magpies ended their two-decade absence from the Champions League.
This decision was made after he provided backup to first-choice keeper Nick Pope when Karl Darlow sustained an injury.
The former Liverpool player was also granted a surprise debut after Pope was issued a red card just one week prior to Newcastle’s match against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final. Martin Dubravka was cup-tied after playing
for the Red Devils in the same competition during a loan term at Old Trafford, and Karius assumed the goalkeeping duties as the Magpies sustained a loss at Wembley.
Newcastle’s veteran custodian would only make one more appearance for the club before departing St James Park in the summer.
He had started the Premier League defeat at Arsenal in February. Karius, who has been the subject of reported interest from numerous Serie A and Saudi Pro League clubs, is currently a free agent.
He has now acknowledged that he may shift his focus away from football if he does not receive an offer to return to the game.
He stated to SportBible, “It is evident that retirement is a viable option for you if you have been absent for as long as I have.” I have not yet reached a conclusion, as there is no necessity for me to do so. I remain in good physical condition.
I continue to possess the capacity and potential. In the event that a door remains closed, I must be forthright and tell myself, “Listen.” I have a plethora of other activities that I am passionate about and am willing to invest time and effort into.
I do not anticipate that it would have a significant impact on me, as I have already undergone this procedure in the past few years. You never know. I may be summoned tomorrow in the event that a custodian sustains an injury.
It is possible that I will be in the goal once more within the next week. You never know. If that does not transpire, I will likely remain in Italy, where I will spend a significant amount of time with my family and continue to develop my music.
