Sheffield Wednesday Forward George Brown Out for Several Weeks with Injury
Sheffield Wednesday forward George Brown has been ruled out for several weeks after suffering an injury in training. The young striker has made a rapid rise this season, moving up from the academy to score twice in his opening appearances for the Owls.
Manager Henrik Pedersen spoke last week about the importance of managing the workload of younger players, but a freak accident in training means the Yorkshire-born attacker could miss up to two months of action. The news comes shortly after fellow young talent Ernie Weaver was confirmed to be sidelined for the majority, if not all, of the season following foot surgery. While neither injury is muscular, the situation adds further strain to a coaching staff already working with a thin squad.
“Yesterday in training, he got the ball at his feet in a pressing situation and it twisted, so he is injured,” Pedersen told The Star. “I think he will be out for six to eight weeks. The ball touched his foot and it just twisted.”
Brown missed Wednesday’s narrow 1-0 home defeat to a strong Middlesbrough side, widely tipped as title contenders. The match took place amid a mass supporter boycott that left Hillsborough stands largely empty. Despite the challenging circumstances, Pedersen praised his team’s performance.
“We played against a great, strong Middlesbrough team. Rob [Middlesbrough manager] has done a fantastic job — they are well organised and clear in their playing philosophy. First half was very even, and we stayed in the game, coming back from 1-0 down to challenge them,” he said.
“We made a few changes in the second half and were strong. We have to be proud that we can compete with a team like Middlesbrough. The boys are disappointed we didn’t get anything today, but given where we are, we delivered at a high level.”
