Rangers are reportedly facing complications in their bid to appoint Kevin Muscat as their new manager.
According to Sky Sports News, the club is still assessing multiple candidates to succeed Philippe Clement, but former Rangers defender Muscat has emerged as the leading contender.
The 52-year-old, who made 26 appearances and helped Rangers win a domestic treble during the 2002–03 season, is currently managing Shanghai Port in China and is held in high regard by the Ibrox hierarchy.
Muscat was also linked with the Rangers job in 2023 before the club chose Clement, but this time the route to appointing him appears more open. However, The Rangers Review reports that his current role in China makes the move financially challenging, with the club expected to pay a seven-figure compensation fee to secure his release.
Chinese sources claim Muscat’s contract with Shanghai Port runs until December 2026, and he currently earns between £1.6 million and £2 million annually.
Adding to the complexity, Muscat is on the brink of guiding Shanghai Port to a second consecutive Chinese Super League title, and he is not expected to leave until that objective is achieved.
In the meantime, Under-19s coach Steven Smith and Brian Gilmour are overseeing first-team training ahead of Saturday’s Scottish Premiership clash with Dundee United.
