Newcastle United wants to sign Michael Olise, which makes Magpies fans very excited about the possibility of such an exciting and risky summer arrival. But can Eddie Howe’s team afford such a costly deal in these days of profit and sustainability rules?

Yes, but there are a lot of things that could change in the next few months when it comes to Newcastle’s finances. Olise is set to fetch more than £60 million this summer, so even the biggest clubs will find it hard to make a deal.

It is well known that Newcastle and their Premier League rivals are having money problems. There were no new senior stars signed by the club in January. In fact, there wasn’t much business done in the whole of the Premier League because Everton and Nottingham Forest were fined money. As of July 1, which is the start of a new financial year for clubs, they usually pay more.

People keep telling Newcastle that they need to watch their money, but this summer there is money to be spent on Tyneside. A short time in the Champions League brought in extra money for St. James’ Park, and the arrival of Adidas and other big-name sponsors will make it easier to bring in new players.

Newcastle has made a big difference in how much money they bring into the club through different outlets. Last year’s accounts, which don’t include Champions League and Adidas bonuses, showed that sales were up 39% for the year ending June 30, 2023. The yearly income went up from £180 million the previous year to £250.3 million because of more money coming in from matchdays, commercials, and media rights.

Howe says it’s hard to give an exact amount to his transfer budget this summer, but he does expect to be helped in the market, as he has been in almost every other window since he moved to the northeast. In the past few years, the most important signings have been Alexander Isak and Sandro Tonali in the summers, and Sven Botman, Tino Livramento, Harvey Barnes, and Nick Pope in the off-season.

This time, the most important player signed this summer will almost certainly be a right winger. Anthony Gordon has firmly established himself on the left wing, and Isak has been very dangerous in the middle. Now, Howe wants to bring in a star player on the right wing so that he can field a deadly front three when everyone is healthy.

Both Miguel Almiron and Yankuba Minteh are expected to leave because of this, and the Magpies are willing to listen to offers for both of them. As of now, Almiron’s new contract has two years left on it. He signed it in 2023. This summer, he is seen as a valuable asset that can be sold. Newcastle should be able to get back most of the £21m they paid for him in 2019.

Minteh was bought for £6.5 million a year ago, but he hasn’t played a single game for Black and White. Feyenoord’s strong loan spell has made people more interested in him and raised his image, but a big offer this summer will give Newcastle the chance to make some money at a very important time.

As Newcastle starts to change things around, other first-team regulars, many of whom Howe wants to keep, may also be let go. In January, there was interest in Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson, but both players chose to stay where they were. A different conclusion may happen if people are interested in this window in the same way.

You could also sell Martin Dubravka, Matt Targett, Harrison Ashby, Sean Longstaff, and Jamal Lewis to get money for spending and paying people. There is also a chance that Isaac Hayden and Ryan Fraser will be sent somewhere else in the next few weeks.

A £60 million arrival on a five-year contract will only show up as a £12 million charge in each annual account. This is because of amortization. If, on the other hand, the club sells a homegrown academy graduate, they can write off the whole amount as a profit in their annual books.

Newcastle has also been looking for smart and savvy players to bring in to start the window and free up money for other areas. There are a lot of good things about Lloyd Kelly’s free move, both on and off the field. Before he chose to join Chelsea for free, a move for Tosin Adarabioyo would have been just as good.

A lot of big clubs in Europe are interested in Olise, the 22-year-old winger for Crystal Palace. These clubs include Bayern Munich, Chelsea, and both Manchester teams. Because of this, Newcastle is up against it to win the race.

There are rumors that Olise’s deal has a Champions League clause, which gives Newcastle’s rivals hope. Also, the player and Chelsea agreed to terms on a personal level last summer, but the move fell through, and he stayed at Crystal Palace.

There’s no doubt that this kind of move would make all the difference for Newcastle. You can spend the money, but you’ll probably need first-team exits, a really good sales pitch, and some luck.

Fans of Newcastle will still be excited to see Olise in a black and white shirt, though.
