The Premier League has issued a statement regarding VAR following the contentious penalty by Manchester City. The Premier League has verified the rationale behind the VAR decision to award a penalty to Aston Villa in the match against Manchester City this evening. After Bernardo Silva’s initial strike, City took the lead.
However, ten minutes later, Ruben Dias was found to have brought down Jacob Ramsey in the area, resulting in a penalty awarded to the opponent. Craig Pawson, the referee, initially declined to award a spot kick. Nevertheless, VAR John Brooks elected to direct Pawson to observe the monitor, and he ultimately decided to defy his own judgement. The penalty was converted by Marcus Rashford,
and the Etihad Stadium was filled with jeers as the decision was broadcast on the large screens. The Premier League has now verified the reason for Pep Guardiola’s booking for his complaints. The Premier League Match Centre stated that VAR reviewed the referee’s decision to not award a penalty to Aston Villa for a challenge by Dias on Ramsey. The VAR determined that there was a clear collision and recommended an on-field review.
“Aston Villa was awarded a penalty after the referee reversed the initial decision.” The decision could be crucial for City, given the closeness of the Champions League race. In the competition to secure a spot in the top five, City and Villa are separated by a mere one point. Currently, the Blues are in fourth place; however, they are aware that a victory would secure their position, whereas Villa
will surpass Guardiola’s team if they emerge victorious. The top five teams in the Premier League will qualify for the Champions League this season, in contrast to the previous season, as a result of the performance of English clubs in Europe. The sixth-place team will qualify for the Europa League rather than the Conference League due to the additional berth. At the Manchester Evening
