The chances of Michael Carrick or Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink returning to Middlesbrough have been ruled out. Carrick was dismissed after a disappointing 2024/25 season, which paved the way for Rob Edwards’ appointment. With Edwards now departing for Wolverhampton Wanderers, speculation about Middlesbrough’s next managerial move has intensified.
Despite links to a potential return, the Northern Echo reports that neither Carrick nor Hasselbaink—who was considered a surprise candidate—will take over at the Riverside.
Raphael Wicky is understood to be interested in stepping into the role. The 48-year-old has never managed in the UK but brings experience from clubs such as BSC Young Boys, Chicago Fire, and Basel.
Meanwhile, Middlesbrough are comfortable keeping Adi Viveash as caretaker head coach during the international break.
Viveash oversaw a 2-1 home victory over Birmingham City, praising the players and fans for their effort and resilience. The club is not believed to be in a hurry to appoint a permanent manager, preferring to take a measured approach despite mid-season typically favoring swift decisions.
