The reason Erling Haaland was incensed with his Manchester City teammate at halftime during the match against Tottenham was that Pep Guardiola intervened.
On Wednesday night, Manchester City secured a critical victory by defeating Spurs 1-0 in an away game. Erling Haaland scored his 20th Premier League goal of the season in the 12th minute, securing the victory.
In reality, however, Haaland had the potential to score a hat-trick in the first half, and City could have scored four or five. However, the extent of their wastage was ultimately irrelevant. Pep Guardiola’s team secured their first away victory in the league since their 6-0 demolition
of Ipswich Town in mid-January, thereby regaining their winning streak following their 2-0 loss to Liverpool at home. City continues to occupy the fourth position in the Premier League table. In spite of their recent struggles, the Manchester City players appear to be aligned in their pursuit of a position within the Champions League qualification spots for the upcoming season.
However, at halftime of the Spurs encounter, there was a slight disagreement between Haaland and full-back Matheus Nunes, which was observed by numerous fans as the players exited the pitch. What transpired between Erling Haaland and Matheus Nunes during the Spurs versus Man City match?
The city concluded the first half robustly. They ought to have entered the break with a substantial lead, but both Haaland and Savinho squandered significant opportunities. As City advanced on the brink of half-time, Nunes mishandled a pass while City sought to counterattack.
It left Haaland incensed when the whistle signalled half-time. Journalist Sam Lee chronicled the event. Upon entering the changing rooms, Haaland exhibited palpable anger at Nunes, while Guardiola initially comforted Nunes before subsequently expressing animated discourse with the former Wolves player.
Manchester City acquired Nunes, 26, for £53 million from Wolves in September 2023. This season, the Brazilian full-back has participated in 18 Premier League matches for City, providing four assists. Nunes established his reputation with Sporting CP in Portugal before transferring to Wolves in England in 2022. Nunes has disclosed his desire to return to Sporting CP at some stage in his career.
He stated, “Clearly, I wish to return, and I have articulated that multiple times…” I will not specify dates or provide estimates, but I will certainly return. City supporters are significantly polarised regarding Nunes. His performance has been inconsistent since his transfer to the Etihad, and Haaland’s dissatisfaction
with him may reflect the sentiments of many supporters regarding his performance this season. Rico Lewis is undoubtedly the favoured selection, although Nunes serves as a valuable alternative for Guardiola to shuffle his lineup. If he does not meet expectations, City may seek to capitalise this summer to finance their impending reconstruction.
