Hyunjun Yang remains a divisive figure among Celtic supporters. The South Korean winger has been at the club for three seasons but has yet to establish himself as a regular starter.
After Celtic’s big win at Feyenoord, interim manager Martin O’Neill praised Yang, saying he can “do things other players can’t.”
Yang’s equaliser against Feyenoord set the tone for the Hoops’ dominant performance, prompting former Celtic goalkeeper Joe Hart to apologise live on TNT Sports for not giving Yang enough credit at the time.
“That first goal against Feyenoord was a really beautiful bit of play,” Hart said. “I’m really sorry I didn’t give it the credit it deserved. I was distracted by the fireworks, and Hatate has been involved in everything tonight. Yang was excellent, even at the back post—concentration top class.”
Despite the praise, Yang’s statistics don’t fully back it up. In 77 appearances for Celtic, the 23-year-old has scored seven goals and provided seven assists, starting only 31 times.
O’Neill’s public backing, however, suggests the winger may benefit from renewed confidence, with hope that new manager Wilfried Nancy could further develop his potential.
O’Neill’s comments have left fans wondering if Yang might finally be on the verge of becoming the world-class winger he has the ability to be.
