Full explanation revealed for delay in Zain Silcott-Duberry’s Sheffield Wednesday move
Zain Silcott-Duberry, 20, has officially joined Sheffield Wednesday as a free agent after completing his move on Thursday.
The former Chelsea and Bournemouth youngster became available after mutually terminating his contract with Greek side Olympiakos before the January transfer deadline.
Following several impressive trial spells with the Owls, manager Henrik Pedersen decided to add him to his squad.
However, the transfer was not completed as quickly as initially expected, sparking some concern among supporters. The Sheffield Star reported earlier in the week that the deal was close to being finalised, but confirmation did not arrive until a few days later.
According to a subsequent update from The Star, the delay was caused by a minor complication involving the registration of the winger’s insurance.
Why was Silcott-Duberry’s transfer delayed?
Although the move was anticipated earlier in the week, it was only wrapped up on Thursday due to the small administrative issue. The club clarified that the insurance matter was minor and did not impact long-term plans.
Importantly, the delay did not disrupt his immediate involvement, as he was never expected to feature in the midweek trip to Norwich City. Instead, attention had already shifted towards a potential debut this weekend away at Southampton.
During the week, Silcott-Duberry remained at the club’s Middlewood Road training base, undergoing additional fitness assessments to determine how quickly he could contribute for the remainder of the season.
Opportunity amid injury setbacks
Pedersen has been forced to navigate a growing injury list in recent weeks. Olaf Kobacki, Marvelous Nakamba and Liam Cooper are all sidelined, with Cooper expected to miss the rest of the campaign.
With Wednesday already relegated, any additions between now and the season’s end will be expected to make a meaningful impact. Silcott-Duberry will be hoping not only to help the team finish strongly, but also to position himself as a key figure ahead of next season in League One.
A chance to reignite his career
Once regarded as one of Chelsea’s brightest academy prospects, Silcott-Duberry made his senior and Premier League appearances during his time with Bournemouth.
His spell in Greece proved frustrating, however. Minor injuries limited his progress at Olympiakos, and he featured mainly for the club’s B team in the Greek second tier, making 11 appearances, including three starts.
Now, his move to Hillsborough presents a valuable chance to secure regular first-team football and remind observers why he was so highly rated during his youth career.
The winger has signed an initial contract until the end of the season. With relegation already confirmed, he is likely to be given the freedom to express himself and help Wednesday accumulate as many points as possible before May.
Strong performances could boost his prospects of earning a longer-term stay at the club — or attracting interest elsewhere when the summer window opens.
