Rangers have resumed their search for a new manager after talks with Kevin Muscat collapsed.
The Ibrox club had been in advanced discussions with the Australian, who was set to succeed Russell Martin. However, insiders revealed that Muscat’s reluctance to leave his current role at Chinese side Shanghai Port immediately stalled the deal.
The former Rangers defender is determined to finish the Super League season, just three matches short of securing a title. Rangers ultimately decided they could not wait until December for his arrival.
Despite this, Muscat was reportedly eager to return to Ibrox, according to the Daily Record.
Initial discussions with American owners Andrew Cavenagh and Paraag Marathe had brought him close to finalizing a deal, but subsequent negotiations with CEO Patrick Stewart, sporting director Kevin Thelwell, and 49ers Enterprises advisor Gretar Steinsson failed to yield an agreement.
As a result, Rangers have reopened their managerial search.
Steven Gerrard was initially the club’s top choice and even met with Rangers officials in London before withdrawing.
Rangers then approached other candidates, including German coach Danny Rohl, who also stepped aside once Muscat entered the picture.
Although Rangers were confident a deal with Muscat was achievable and believed a broad agreement had been reached, negotiations ultimately fell apart on Sunday, with Muscat choosing to remain in China, where he still has a year left on his contract.
