Celtic’s transfer strategy has shifted following Martin O’Neill’s return to the club.
Wilfried Nancy oversaw just one January addition before his departure, with Julian Araujo arriving on loan from Bournemouth. His dismissal has forced the Hoops to reassess their approach in the market, while talk of a surprise loan return for Kyogo Furuhashi has cooled.
For a time, it appeared Hajduk Split midfielder Niko Sigur was closing in on a move to Glasgow, but talks stalled — and the reasons have now become clearer.
Why a move for Niko Sigur has stalled
The 28-year-old defensive midfielder had been identified as a strong fit to operate alongside Callum McGregor, offering balance and protection in the centre of the pitch.
However, Croatian journalist Izak Ante Sucic reports that the managerial change at Celtic has seen priorities shift, with alternative targets now being explored and negotiations for Sigur effectively paused.
Complicating matters further, Hajduk Split have opted to loan out Fran Karacic, increasing the likelihood that Sigur remains at the club unless a significant offer arrives.
Celtic’s long-term McGregor dilemma remains
Despite McGregor’s continued importance, the 32-year-old has shown signs of fatigue, particularly during Nancy’s time in charge.
In the 3-4-3 system, the captain often appeared short of support in midfield, even when deployed alongside additional bodies, as seen in the win over Dundee United.
Celtic are increasingly aware that, sooner rather than later, they must identify a successor capable of easing the burden on McGregor and eventually stepping into the void he will leave behind.
