Transfer alert: Rangers target English centre-mid in Serie A

Rangers have already begun laying the groundwork in the transfer market as they prepare to strengthen their squad for a potential Scottish Premiership title charge.

Club investor Andrew Cavenagh is expected to support head coach Danny Rohl during the January window, giving the German tactician the opportunity to add quality and depth to his team.

Rangers come into the new year with momentum after edging out St Mirren 2-1 on Tuesday night, a result that leaves them six points behind league leaders Hearts.

However, if the Light Blues are to mount a serious challenge for the title in the second half of the season, improving their midfield options appears to be a priority.

Rangers step up interest in Emil Bohinen

According to reports from Italian outlet La Nazione, Rangers are currently in discussions over a move for Emil Bohinen, who is on loan at Venezia from Serie A side Genoa. The midfielder, who was born in Derby but represents Norway internationally, has made just eight appearances in Serie B this season, yet remains highly regarded in European football circles.

It is claimed that Genoa and Venezia are prepared to cut short Bohinen’s loan spell, potentially paving the way for a January move to Ibrox. Rangers are not alone in their pursuit, though, with Serie A club Spezia and several Eredivisie sides also monitoring the 26-year-old’s situation.

Bohinen spent last season with Frosinone in Serie B, where he featured 12 times as the club narrowly avoided the relegation play-off by a single point. Despite limited game time, his technical ability and experience at a high level have kept him on the radar of multiple clubs.

Previous links to English football

The midfielder is no stranger to British football interest. Back in 2020, Bohinen trained with Sheffield United while they were competing in the Premier League, and during that period he was also strongly linked with Leeds United. He even visited Elland Road, though neither move ultimately materialised.

At the time, Bohinen was playing for Norwegian side Stabæk, before securing a move to CSKA Moscow in February 2021. He later joined Salernitana, experiencing Serie A football before his current spell in Italy.

Should Rangers succeed in bringing him to Glasgow, supporters will hope that Bohinen’s English upbringing helps him adapt quickly to life in Scotland and allows him to make an immediate impact in Rohl’s squad as the title race intensifies.
