Newcastle United has been dealt an early blow in the transfer window when one of their main targets decides to relocate elsewhere.
Bryan Mbeumo, a Brentford winger, was one of Newcastle’s primary transfer targets prior to the summer window.
During the 2024-25 season, the 25-year-old scored 20 goals in 38 Premier League appearances, surpassing only Manchester City’s Erling Haaland, Newcastle’s Alexander Isak, and Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah.
Newcastle’s squad has not undergone any significant additions to the right wing area since the club’s acquisition in 2021. Jacob Murphy is the current first-choice in the position and has had an exceptional season, contributing nine goals and 14 assists in total.
Eddie Howe, Newcastle’s head coach, disclosed that the club would be seeking to recruit a right-winger to replace Miguel Almiron, who was transferred to Atlanta United in January. Howe has also deployed Anthony Gordon, Harvey Barnes, and Will Osula out of position on the right flank. However, there is currently no natural alternative to Murphy.
Despite signing Yankuba Minteh from Feyenoord in 2023, the Magpies ultimately sold him to Brighton & Hove Albion without allowing him to make a single appearance for the club.
In the summer, Newcastle identified Mbeumo as their primary objective due to the absence of natural competition for Murphy and the availability of funds. However, it seems that the Cameroon international has already made a decision regarding his future, as the initial transfer window has only been open for two days.
