Newcastle United
“TRUTH MOMENT” – English football pundit made a confession on how he was suppose to be the coach in Newcastle United F.C and why he turned down the job offer
The famous Sky Sports commentator has only ever been in charge of a team in La Liga, Valencia.
Gary Neville shocked everyone by saying that Newcastle United’s former owner Mike Ashley once offered him the job of manager.
The former captain of Manchester United has had a lot of success since he retired as a commentator, and he is most famous for appearing every week on Sky Sports.
The 49-year-old did try his hand at management with Valencia in La Liga, but only stayed there for four months. He also led his team to a humiliating 7-0 loss to Barcelona at the Nou Camp in the Copa del Rey.
Considering that the Magpies are now owned by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), it’s unlikely that someone with Neville’s experience will ever be considered as a new boss.
“The more I think about it, I took the job at Valencia because I knew the owner,” he said on the most recent episode of the Stick to Football Podcast. “I believed I was devoted to him and depended on him for the company.”
“But I had been asked to visit Middlesbrough, Newcastle, and a few other clubs. I think Derby asked me to come.” I had turned every one of them down because it wasn’t where I wanted to be over the past three years. When I first started working in business and the media, I didn’t want to be a teacher.
“I had already said no to Newcastle, and I’ve never said this in public. It was someone from Sky who knew someone at Newcastle and said they wanted to talk to you.” I’m not saying it would have gotten me the job, but it might have.
