Truth Revealed: Eddie Howe Explains Why Malick Thiaw Was Pulled vs Leeds

Malick Thiaw has apologised after being substituted at half-time during Newcastle United’s dramatic 4-3 victory over Leeds United at St James’ Park.

The Magpies recovered from trailing on three separate occasions before Harvey Barnes struck a record-breaking 102nd-minute winner, the latest decisive goal in Premier League history.

Newcastle went into the break 2-1 down after goals from Brendan Aaronson and a Dominic Calvert-Lewin penalty. Barnes had briefly levelled before Leeds regained the lead in stoppage time.

Thiaw endured a difficult first half, playing a part in both goals conceded. He slipped in the build-up to Aaronson’s opener and later conceded a penalty for handball. Already booked early on, Eddie Howe replaced the defender with Sven Botman at the interval.

Explaining the decision, Howe said he acted to prevent a possible red card, adding that it was an uncharacteristically tough spell for a player who has otherwise been excellent.

Despite the setback, Newcastle completed an incredible comeback. Joelinton equalised early in the second half before Bruno Guimarães and Barnes struck late to seal the win.

Thiaw later took to Instagram to apologise, admitting it was a “blackout” performance on his part while praising the team’s mentality.
